Reactiv Acquires U.S. Competitor Kin to Expand Its Mobile Commerce Business

Canadian mobile commerce company Reactiv has acquired U.S.-based competitor Kin Commerce in a deal that gives the young startup access to new technology, customers and major retail brands.

The acquisition, which closed in early September, brings Kin’s technology and customer relationships into Reactiv. Its client portfolio includes brands such as Steve Madden, Chubbies, Lashify and Martie. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Founded in 2023 by former Shopify employees, Reactiv develops mobile commerce platforms that help retailers build and operate their own shopping apps. Kin, founded a year earlier by former Meta employees, offered similar technology while placing greater emphasis on social features such as personalised content feeds, forums and Instagram integrations.

The deal also follows a previously undisclosed $6 million seed extension raised by Reactiv earlier this year, bringing its total external funding to approximately $12 million. Reactiv now has 31 employees, with one Kin engineer joining the company as part of the acquisition.

For Reactiv, the acquisition is less about simply eliminating a competitor and more about accelerating growth. The company plans to maintain Kin as a separate product initially before exploring how its social-commerce capabilities can be incorporated into Reactiv's platform.

The transaction highlights how smaller technology companies can use acquisitions to gain customers, intellectual property and capabilities that could take years to develop independently. For Reactiv, the next challenge will be turning those assets into a larger and more integrated mobile-commerce business.
