MTN Ghana Expands SME Support Beyond Major Business Cities

MTN Ghana is taking its small-business support programme beyond the country’s major commercial centres, targeting entrepreneurs in regional communities with digital skills and practical tools to help them compete and grow.

The latest move was highlighted through an SME capacity-building clinic held in Sunyani in Ghana’s Bono Region, where about 200 entrepreneurs, business owners and aspiring founders received training on digitalisation, business performance, team building and sustainability. The programme is expected to expand across all 16 regions of Ghana.

For small businesses, the significance goes beyond training. Entrepreneurs outside major cities can face weaker access to business networks, digital expertise and potential customers. By bringing its SME support directly into regional markets, MTN is effectively creating more opportunities for businesses that might otherwise have to travel to Accra or other commercial hubs to access similar resources.

The initiative forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader SME Accelerate programme, which includes regional clinics, certification, business fairs, mentorship and access to markets. More than 1,400 SMEs across Ghana’s 16 regions had already benefited from the initiative by September.

The business opportunity for MTN is also significant. As more small companies adopt digital tools, online marketing and mobile-based business services, supporting their growth can strengthen MTN’s position as a long-term technology and connectivity partner rather than simply a telecommunications provider.

For participating businesses, the bigger value may be the ability to turn digital adoption into actual revenue, stronger operations and access to customers beyond their immediate communities.
